john ruszel, maker of things
the objects on which our society is built are created with utility in mind. electrical insulators capping telephone poles, the arrangement of guy wires around an aerial, canvas stretched over a load. these are the objects which we routinely overlook, but in their utility lies great beauty. these objects inspire my work.

in sculpture, formal and aesthetic elements are distilled from these objects. elements are arranged and tested in different materials. in turn, materials become guides for form. each generation leads to both refinement and mutation.

on paper, these objects become the work. machine components guide the development of images through their possible interactions and existing limitations. they are then used as the matrix from which a print is pulled.

the work is not a reinterpretation of the existing form but an expression of its essence.

tension, balance, gravity, symmetry, pattern.
